In Korea, printing techniques using woodcut has developed since the era of the Three Kingdoms. During the Goryeo Dynasty, the Tripitaka Koreana was published, and during the Joseon Dynasty, a publishing project using woodblocks was carried out at the national level. There were Gyoseogwan and Jujaso that belonged to Yejo, that systematically managed the works of carving woodblocks(Gakjajang), printing(Inchuljang), and book binding.(Juljang) 

Jo Hyang Sook is one of the few contemporary woodcut artists who does carving and hand printing in traditional way by following steps. First, the appropriate amount of prepared Muck or coloring paint is applied on the plate, and spreaded evenly with an ink brush. Hanji(traditional Korean paper), carefully trimmed and sized by absorbing mallow rose for more vivid output, is placed on the plate. Then it is rubbed out with ‘Inche(also called as Mildae)’, traditional Korean baren that is produced by the artist herself with human hair. Inche also contains of beeswax, which reduces friction with paper and prevents Muck from spreading when printed.(Jo Hyang Sook,fig. 01.1, 01.2)

The process of woodcut requires patience and a high level of skill in addition to the artistry of the printmaking itself. In the series "Search of the Lost Times– Happy Memories", which is her exhibition of a collection of recent intensive printings after 10 years of tenacious carving, shows the essence of our unique woodcut technique.

They are not in the same place they once were. From a critical point of view, I find a certain pleasure in what Ryu is doing today, specifically in a series called Forest – Black Hole.   These paintings suggest they are the work of an artist emerging from the cocoon of her past. Youngsin Ryu is a highly accomplished contemporary painter who for the past five years has focused her attention on representing the formal elegance of birch trees. Like many Korean painters, her point of view is to envision forms in nature that contain the Qi or quiet energy. She discovered the natural movements ofthe trunks, branches, and leaves of these vibrant trees while observing the effect of breezes blowing through the forest glade.   Inspired by what she saw, Youngsin Ryu chose to transform this rhythmic sensation into an epic of wonderment through the art of painting.   It is precisely this sense of wonder that intrigued the artist, thus giving   the artist a necessary focus by which to concentrate and transform her perceptions of nature through her lingering experience in the birch forest.   Why birch tress?   They are strong,
